MAYA - DIRECTOR'S TRANSCRIPT
We open in the jungles of Central America. It’s thick with plants and wild life. We see birds, insects, snakes, monkeys, plus other creatures that are heard but not seen. A group of Mayan men in simple loin clothes push through the jungle into a clearing where a beam of sunlight streams through the jungle canopy illuminating a cacao tree.
VO: Two and a half thousand years ago the Mayans discovered the secret of the cacao bean.
We then cut to hoards of people milling about in a large market. It’s here in the market that we see large vessels of smooth, dark chocolate being mixed and poured onto stone slabs, where it cools and makes solid chocolate. We see what appears to be the king of the village surveying the scene, accompanied by a couple of servants.
VO: Smooth rich dark chocolate that was to become revered throughout their culture.
Cutting around the market we see gold being exchanged for cocao beans.
VO: Such was its worth it replaced gold as their currency… but wealth never goes unchallenged.
We cut to see a large group of warriors suddenly storm the market in an effort to steal the precious cacao beans. They’re dressed in battle garb, and look like they’re from a more aggressive warlike city. An epic battle ensues as the villagers try to defend the cacao beans from the invading army.
The villagers succeed in repelling the invaders, though it is a hard fought battle. We cut to see the victorious king of the village sitting on his throne at the top of a great temple. Next to him, he is presented a golden tray, on it sits a goblet of dark chocolate, a block of dark chocolate and a pile of cacao beans. The king picks up the block of chocolate.
He then walks to the top of the temple stairs and holds the block up to the assembled city below. He takes a spirited bite from the block, and the huge crowd cheer with delight.
VO: It’s from these origins that Cadbury Old Gold was born. Smooth, rich, dark chocolate treasured the world over.
The cracking sound of cannon fire fills the air and we see a cannonball narrowly miss the kings’ head. We cut to see several Galleons in the distance…the precious cacao bean is already under threat again.
